The Problem

At the core of Gamer Advantage glasses is the promise of clinically proven blue light protection that will lead to better sleep. From productivity to healing, the benefits of sleep are innumerable. As our founder Bryan Reedy has said, “Sleep is the number 1 medicine and has been since the beginning of time.” As a result, many in the gaming community who have put their trust in us have experienced improved comfort while gaming and better sleep quality. Many of us know deep down how important sleep is, yet don’t necessarily take action on it. As technology continues to advance and artificial light surrounds us (though blue light can also come from the sun) it’s important to know all of the facts as life becomes more screen-oriented and products like blue light glasses are available to help. The Cleveland Clinic and its article ‘Here’s What Happens When You Don’t Get Enough Sleep (And How Much You Really Need a Night)’ serves as a helpful source to ground our thoughts.

Sleep Recommendations

In its article, the Cleveland Clinic cites the National Sleep Foundation for the sleep recommendations below:

  • Older adults, 65+ years: 7 to 8 hours
  • Adults, 26 to 64 years: 7 to 9 hours
  • Teenagers, 14 to 17 years: 8 to 10 hours
  • School-age children, 6 to 13 years: 9 to 11 hours
  • Preschool children, 3 to 5 years: 10 to 13 hours
  • Toddlers, 1 to 2 years: 11 to 14 hours
  • Infants, 4 to 11 months: 12 to 15 hours
  • Newborns, 0 to 3 months: 14 to 17 hours

Regarding the information above, The Cleveland Clinic states, “The foundation based its report on two years of research and breaks it down into nine age-specific categories, with a slight range that allows for individual preference.” As we can see above and Dr. Harneet Walia, MD notes in the article “a minimum of seven hours of sleep is a step in the right direction to improve your health.” Knowing the effects of blue light and its influence on sleep cycles, these numbers are particularly important to aim for. As Gamer Advantage glasses reduce the amount of high energy light absorbed by our eyes, it will be easier to achieve these targets.

Consequences of Sleep Deprivation

Related to blue light, negative effects include eye strain, headaches, fatigue and of course, sleep disruption/depravation as has been discussed. Focusing on sleep deprivation, the Cleveland Clinic cites excessive daytime sleepiness, impaired memory, lack of alertness and decreased quality life as a few issues among others in the short term. In the long term (regarding chronic sleep deprivation), the Cleveland Clinic cites high blood pressure, diabetes and heart failure among others still. Looking at these serious issues head-on should push us to listen to the voice in the back of our head that urges us to go to bed earlier and get better sleep. Getting the right amount of sleep is far more than a nice goal to achieve, but a necessity.

Solutions

Michelle Drerup, PsyD, DBSM offers many tips in the article, one being to “Treat getting enough sleep as if it is as important as taking medicine.” As we find ourselves as a society obsessed with high quality shoes and other similar goods, it’s time to take that passion and invest it into something even more important —our eyes and health. As the previous paragraph noted, sleep is far more than a ‘nice to have.’ Another recommendation Dr. Drerup offers is to avoid looking at the clock when waking up in the middle of the night. She notes that this can start mental calculations, which makes sense. From our perspective, if the clock a person is looking at is on their phone, it has the potential to suck an individual in early in the morning if something catches the eye via notifications. Sleep can also be disrupted this way.

Also from our perspective are blue light glasses being a key solution. Our glasses are clinically proven to reduce eye strain as well as boost melatonin up to 96% in as little as 5 days. As the Cleveland Clinic has discussed, sleep deprivation is an issue that can have serious consequences. With a flexible frame, lifetime warranty and optional sun clip, Gamer Advantage glasses present a solution that conforms to any lifestyle. As screens become more prevalent, protection against blue light and being able to achieve the proper amount of sleep only becomes more relevant and needed. We hope you join us on this journey and feel the results many already have.
